One of the things I look forward to at the end of the year is the favorite things list–favorite restaurants, favorite movies, favorite spinning classes. I always love to see how many I know about and, of course, add to my list of places to go!
This year, I am sharing my personal list of favorite toys from 2018 and how I’ve used them in my work as a pediatric occupational therapist. Not only can these timeless and practical items provide hours of creative entertainment, but they can also stimulate creativity and develop important problem-solving skills.
Cards
Yes, regular playing cards! The possibilities are limitless. I recently went on an 8-hour train ride and we played cards with strangers, the young and not so young. Little ones can play simple matching games. Looking to learn some new card games that the kids can play? Here’s a list of game ideas and instructions. Add a yummy snack and you’re ready to go!
Blocks
All kinds! Jenga blocks, wooden shaped blocks, small cube blocks, even the giant cardboard blocks are my favorite. I often come to work with a box of one-inch blocks and play with the preschoolers and the older kids, as well. They can just free build, copy a simple or complex pattern, or they can work on visual memory by looking at a block design and then re-creating it.
Legos
No need to explain here! From free building to creating complex sets the possibilities are literally limitless. I will add that there is value in following the developmental sequence, starting with the big ones, then the Duplos before you move on to the small regular sized Legos.
Crafts
Again, possibilities here are limitless. Crafts are an easy go-to for toddlers thru teens. Both boys and girls. Some of my favorites supplies include Perler beads, crayon rocks, paints and a canvas, and making anything with clay or dough to strengthen those hand muscles.
So there you have it–my 2018 list of favorite toys!
