MATHNASIUM: The Math Learning Center

0

The experience with my children’s distance learning left me with two clear feelings. The first one is that I love Math. #MathNerdMom here! And the second one is that I’m a terrible Math teacher even though I’m passionate about it. I can’t efficiently communicate Math content to my kids, or at least I don’t have the patience. So when I heard a Math training “gym” was available in Miami, I ran to make an appointment and try it out.

The Mathnasium Method

Mathnasium is a Math learning center for school-aged kids. If its name gave you a clue, it works like a gym where children can attend at their convenience and need. The main goal of the franchise is to enhance math skills which will impact school performance. But overall, what attracted me the most is the idea of improving my kids’ confidence. I love to see how proud my son feels when he gets a 100 on a math test, or how confident my daughter looks when she answers all her math assignments correctly.

I was looking to boost what I call the “math confidence,” so  I started by making an appointment for a diagnostic test. I arranged the date and time quickly through a phone call. When the day arrived, I brought my kids to the center, where I was pleasantly surprised by the joyful and warm welcome they received. After a couple of ice breaker questions, the instructors dived into the oral and written evaluation. If I hadn’t known they were testing, I would have thought they were chatting with a friend. The instructors are trained to make the kids feel comfortable while making evaluation questions look like a relaxed conversation.

From Results to Action

The personalized evaluation took 90 minutes. I received the results the same day by e-mail and discussed them over a video call. According to their next school grade, all the learning areas were measured by a score like a regular math test. But most importantly, with the results, I received an action plan to improve their understanding and skills. Like a roadmap to take them to the next level of math knowledge, a Math Nerd Mom’s dream come true.

So far, I had had a pleasant experience with Mathnasium, but before signing up for a membership program, I asked my kids what they thought about going back to the center. My pre-teen said: ok…(in the way a pre-teen shows excitement about any plan proposed by an adult…topic for another post). However, my 7-year-old girl jumped out of excitement! She told me she found the experience fun! You heard right; she said Math is fun!
