Whether you’re hiding from the summer heat or shielding yourself from an afternoon thunderstorm, it can be a challenge to keep kids entertained indoors during the final stretch of summer. Inviting them to join you in the kitchen for some kid-friendly snacks is a great way to spend quality time with them before they go back to school, while allowing them to be creative and have fun. Here are 6 summer treats to make with your kids before back-to-school that they’ll have just as much fun making as they will eating.
Chocolate Chip Cookie S’mores
Nothing says summer like s’mores! But with a low stock of graham crackers and no campfire in site, my daughter and I came up with our own version. Simply bake chocolate chip cookies (from scratch or using pre-made dough like NESTLÉ Toll House); slather on some Nutella; then add some microwaved marshmallows (heating them for about 10-12 seconds does the trick) before topping with another cookie and voila! They’re easy to make and the gooey mess makes them just as fun to eat!
Mini Jello Fish Bowls
There are several other iterations of this you can try! For an ocean look, forgo the Nerds candy and add gummy sharks instead!
Fruit Squeezer Frozen Banana Pop Treats
These banana pop treats are another great summer treat to make with your kids before back-to-school. With fruit and yogurt being the base of this snack, it’s pretty healthy! Let the kids pick out their own toppings — like cereal, chocolate chips or their favorite candy — for an extra fun, personal touch.
Rice Krispie Watermelon Treats
This fun take on summer’s favorite fruit — complete with your childhood favorite Rice Krispies — is sure to have everyone smiling (and sticky).
Rainbow Graham Crackers
Anyone else look forward to seeing that rainbow at the end of a rainy afternoon? These are the perfect rain, rain, go away, come again another day summer snack that your kids will love.
Summer Scene Pudding Cups
The kids will get a kick out the tanning bear and umbrella and who doesn’t love some cool pudding on a warm, summer day?
