Another “National” day? Wait! National Donut Day has some history…

You may be thinking this is another national *insert thing here* day that has recently been made up. But here’s the thing, National Donut Day has its origins in World War I. Who would’ve thought? The Salvation Army Lassies are the women that served the “Salvation Army Doughnut” to soldiers on the front lines in France back in 1917. Two brave Salvation Army volunteers, Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance started frying up donuts in soldiers’ helmets to boost their morale! Back then, our soldiers were called “doughboys” and that’s where the name was born. In 1938, the Salvation Army of Chicago celebrated the first-ever National Donut Day to commemorate the Donut Lassies’ efforts. So today, you’re not just celebrating eating some fried dough, you’re celebrating American and women’s history!
