It’s that time of the year again! Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is here. We love to celebrate this 8-day holiday with all its traditions such as lighting the menorah every night, eating latkes with apple sauce, and spinning the dreidel.
And we started to create our own family traditions. Unlike Christmas, it is not customary to have a tree at home for Chanukah. However, we felt like creating some holiday atmosphere in our home during Miami’s hot winter. So last year we bought a reusable palm tree and decorated it with all sorts of Miami-themed ornaments such as avocados and flamingos.
I also like to try out new recipes. While my latke-making skills are clearly not as great as my fellow Miami Mom Collective Contributor Rachelle Haime’s, I did make these dreidel pops a few times. They were a huge hit at the family get-together. Not only do they look cute but they also taste delicious. A dreidel is a four-sided spinning top with a Hebrew letter on each side. You spin the dreidel and depending on which letter stays on top, you either get the entire pot, half the pot, nothing, or you have to add coins to the pot. The coins are usually gelt which are Hanukkah chocolate coins. But the older your kids are, the more interested they might be in using actual coins.
What you need:
Marshmallows (please note that most store-bought Marshmallows are not kosher)
Short pretzel sticks
Hershey chocolate kisses or hugs
Blue food writing gel
How to make your dreidel pops:
- Stick a short pretzel stick in each marshmallow
- In a hot skillet, heat the bottom of the Hershey kisses or hugs so that they are slightly starting to melt.
- Quickly stick the melted part on each marshmallow top on the opposite side of the pretzel stick. Let cool down for a few minutes.
- Decorate the marshmallows with Hebrew letters נ ,ג ,ה ,ש using the blue writing gel
