Mother’s Day: Celebrating All Versions of Motherhood

0

Mother’s Day was made official in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed a measure establishing the 2nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. This was all because of a woman named Anna Jarvis. After Anna’s mother passed away, she fought to create a day that honored mothers and the sacrifices that they make.

Honoring Your Mother

Who better to honor on Mother’s Day than our own mother? Being a mom is definitely the most selfless job. It is the only job you apply to without knowing the full job description and with no salary. Knowing all this, it is still one of the most sought-after jobs.

I will take a moment to honor my mama. She had a tough role as a teen mom to twins and she killed it. Thank you mama for growing alongside us, for allowing us to be ourselves, and for guiding us without judgment.

Recognizing the Women that Take on a Mother Role

I was lucky enough to have a lot of women raise me. They were not my mother but they definitely took on a mothering role. My 2 aunts are 6 and 7 years older than my mom. They always treated me and my sister like their daughters. On Mother’s Day, I always include them in the celebration because they were a huge part of molding me into who I am.

We can’t forget grandmas! What is better than an abuela? My grandma is the OG mama. It is amazing to see how moms influence future generations and affect the way we eventually parent our own children.

Moms of Angels

Mother’s Day can also be a difficult day for many. Some women may be struggling with infertility, some may be celebrating their first holiday without their baby, and some may be coping with the loss of what could have been. Remember these women, honor them, and celebrate them.

Celebrating Yourself

Sometimes we forget about ourselves! Mamas, don’t forget to celebrate YOU! You are doing the thing! You are raising tiny humans that eventually turn into big humans. You are influencing a future generation. You are SURVIVING and doing a darn good job!

This May 14th, celebrate!! Happy Mama’s Day!
