About a year ago, my husband and I looked at a 14th-floor apartment in the Design District. The square footage was less than what we needed, but that view made it tough to turn down. I imagined using the balcony as an outdoor living space and creating a little oasis in the sky that we could enjoy together. However, one of the major concerns I had about living there, as a mom of a then 6 and 2-year-old, was about safety.

What if one of my kids, or our cat, decided to try to climb the balcony? Or squeezed through the window? Even now–in the comfort of our ground floor apartment–the thought causes me to shudder. I can’t even imagine. But with urbanization and more families embracing city life and high rise living, there has to be a solution.

Introducing Net Prevent

Net Prevent is a locally owned business that specializes in custom installation of preventive netting for residential and commercial properties. Preventive netting is commonly used in Latin America by parents and pet owners to secure windows and balconies–and it’s now available to us here in South Florida!

What It Is and How It Works

Net Prevent’s preventive netting products are high-quality, stylish, and inconspicuous, increasing safety without compromising the property value of your home or business. In fact, their netting is almost invisible to the eye so your view is not lost or obstructed. They also offer a variety of carbonates and plexiglass depending on your needs.

Because child and pet safety is the goal, a member of their team will come to your home to take measurements and provide a quote based on your specific needs. They will then cut your netting based on weight (children and/or pets). This will ensure that it won’t give way when it’s tested. Their hope is for you to freely enjoy your view and outdoor space without worry. And if you move? Your net can be reused!

They will also remind you when it’s time to replace your net so that it’s not compromised by weather or other elements over time.

One thing COVID has made us realize is how precious outdoor space is. A balcony adds value and quality of life, but can also increase safety concerns and pet runaway risks.
