Memorial Day 2023–which falls on May 29th–is the day that we honor those who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. While it is celebrated on the last Monday in May, events, and remembrances often span the entire weekend. Keeping in mind the importance of balancing fun festivities with the true meaning of the holiday, I have gathered some resources to both honor the fallen and enjoy the long weekend.
Ways to Honor the Fallen
- Take flowers to the South Florida National Cemetery.
- Take a virtual tour of Arlington National Cemetery and discuss the importance of the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
- Attend the 2023 Davie Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony on May 29 in Davie.
Ways to Celebrate
The Hyundai Air and Sea Show

Dubbed The Greatest Show Above Earth, this U.S. Army Salute Fest is a Miami Beach must-see for the entire family. Featuring military personnel and equipment from all five branches of the armed forces, this two-day event (May 27-28) is free to the public. It includes an airshow, an extreme water sport zone, and interactive displays. There is also a concert and fireworks show the night of May 28 featuring Big & Rich (additional ticket purchase required for some viewing areas).
Great American Beach Party
This one-day beach party (May 27) takes place on Ft. Lauderdale Beach at Las Olas Oceanside Park. It includes a sand sculpting contest, water slides, various family activities, a classic car show, live entertainment, and of course a spectacular tribute to the military in the afternoon. It is free to the public and will also feature a precision free-fall parachute jump over the Atlantic.
The Annual Best of the Best Fest
The annual Best of the Best Music Fest, which takes place at Bayfront Park, has been postponed this year. Best of the Best is the largest reggae/Caribbean music festival in North America. The 18th annual Best of the Best Music Fest is currently scheduled to take place on May 26, 2024.
Sean Kenney’s Nature POP Exhibit at Flamingo Gardens
Opening weekend (May 27-29) of this exhibit features 44 sculptures made from over 800,000 Lego bricks. Also, enjoy Flamingo Gardens 60 acres of wildlife and gardens.
