National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th to May 12th. President Ronald Regan declared May 6th to be Nurses’ Day in 1982 and in 1990 the ANA (American Nurses Association) Board of Directors extended the celebration for a whole week. It’s only suiting that May 12th marks the end of Nursing Week since it is no other than Florence Nightingale’s birthday!
I must be honest. I am a nurse and therefore am a little biased about how special our profession is. But to be fair, I felt this way towards nurses for many years even before becoming one myself.
Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare system.
In collaboration with your healthcare providers and staff, nurses are the eyes, ears, and heart of the hospitals. They work endlessly to keep you safe and getting you well is their top priority. Their knowledge and critical thinking skills along with being true patient advocates make them irreplaceable.
The nursing profession is so diverse and can branch from a school nurse to an ICU trauma nurse, to an IT informatics nurse, and a hundred other roles in between. The range is so broad and the opportunities are endless.
Compassionate, caring, loyal, intuitive, selfless. These are all words I would use to describe the nurses I know. Do you know a nurse? Maybe they are your mother, sister, or son? Maybe a neighbor or a best friend. Picture this person; what words would you use to describe them?
The last few years have been very difficult on everyone, but I believe especially on those in healthcare. Nurses championed their way through this pandemic and pushed on even when most wanted to give up. So if you have a nurse in your life give them a big hug and a loud thank you! I promise it means more than you know!
