Picking strawberries at Burr’s Berry Farm

Miami is full of wonderful options for families with kids — from beaches and parks to skating and bowling, but when we want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, we head south. Homestead and the Redland area are often overlooked when it comes to family-friendly fun. However, it’s truly one of our favorite places to spend the day.

Fun on the Farm

Ever since I was a tween, my family has been going to Burr’s Berry Farm and now I take my kids, too. It’s the perfect place to spend some downtime sipping on a refreshing strawberry milkshake. Sometimes I can’t decide between strawberry and pineapple (my kids usually go for the chocolate), but you can’t go wrong no matter which flavor you pick. They offer strawberry shortcake, sundaes and fresh produce, too. You can also pick strawberries in season. The only downside is that Burr’s is only open from December to May. My oldest daughter, Grace, created a video that shows how to pick strawberries (she loves creating videos!). Check it out here.

If you’re looking for a year round option, there’s a nearby gem called Phil’s Berry Farm. Here you’ll find yummy shakes, fresh monkey bread (similar to cinnamon rolls) and a play area for the kids. They’re not open every day so call ahead to confirm their schedule.

Another favorite is Robert is Here, which specializes in exotic fruits and vegetables. Robert’s story is fascinating, as he started by selling fruit on the side of the road when he was a kid. In addition to delicious shakes, you’ll find an animal farm, cool tractors, and a play area where the kiddos can release some energy. There is also live music on the weekends.

Of course, there’s also the famous Knaus Berry Farm, which opens in the fall. While they don’t have a play area for the kids, you can still enjoy their shakes and amazing cinnamon rolls outdoors on their picnic tables, and you can pick strawberries in season.

Animal Experiences

If you’ve had enough shakes and treats and want to get up close and personal with some animals, Pinto’s Farm has farm animals and pony rides for the little ones. Pinto’s is open on the weekends and they have some fun activities and events during holidays throughout the year.

The Little Farm is open most weekends and kids can help feed and learn about farm animals, which include horses, cows, goats, sheep, piglets, rabbits and chickens. They also have a butterfly garden and, if your child really loves it, you can even have their birthday party on the farm.

A Park For Young and Old

For a unique park experience, head to Fruit & Spice Park, a 37-acre tropical garden filled with exotic herbs, spices, fruit and nuts. You can take a guided tour or stroll with the kiddos at your own pace, enjoying the park’s bounty. They also have several fun-filled festivals throughout the year.

There’s so much to see and do down south. It’s really a magical way to spend the day, bond with your little ones, and discover off the beaten path adventures.
