3 Things We Did in Miami While Practicing Social Distancing

Editor’s Note: At the time of this post’s original writing the shelter in place order was not in effect for Miami. The article is a documentation of one Mom’s experience before the shelter in place order. As an entrepreneur, there are mixed feelings when you have the kids at home longer than usual. Sure there are those super-mom saints who love having their kids at home all the time. They’re productive, their house is in order, they always have a full fridge full of healthy snacks, and they have their routines perfectly laid out. And then there are those of us who truly enjoy having a few hours in the day to work on our business, work, or household chores

I normally enjoy having my two kids at home during a school break. I’m mentally preparing myself for weeks. I know that all business duties will have to stop. I know there will be limited social media and that food will run out faster. So I plan a few activities through Groupon, stock the pantry and am ready to be that perfect Pinterest mom.

But when you’re not prepared and they shut down school due to social distancing, it can really throw you off. Appointments have to be moved and you have to rush to get things planned to avoid total cabin fever.

Thankfully, Miami has so many amazing things to do with kids that don’t involve being around tons of people. Three things in particular really made my girls happy. My daughters and I rode around Miami looking for fun things to do.

Miami Design District

We all enjoyed all the beautiful structures, colors, and murals. The girls enjoyed parking the car on different streets and running to take pictures and then running back in the car to find a new spot. We made a fun game out of it. To win, they just had to find a cool spot. It really opened their eyes to view their city as art.

Bike Riding

My little one made a really cute list. Bike riding was one of the items on it. It was amazing being able to spend time playing with her. We weren’t around anyone else. It was just her and me. After we played all day, we went to Publix for their usual free cookie. (Did you know that kids under 13 get a free cookie when you pass by the bakery?) Well, the cookies were gone because of social distancing. That’s always their favorite part but this time we had to live without it. That’s ok. My girls really appreciated some Mommy and me time. And so did I.

The Pool

Who doesn’t know someone with a pool? Grab some friends and have a pool party. My close friends and family brought our kids together on one of the days that week and hung out by the pool. It was a great day. They spent it swimming, eating, and laughing. It’s definitely an amazing memory to share.

I hope you enjoyed your time off with the little ones. We really enjoyed it. However, it’s time for work. Mama needs to go back to making money. We have such little time with our babies while they still want to be with us. Take that short time and make it a little more about them. They’re pretty awesome little people.
