Grace enjoying pottery painting at Artsy Hive.

Summer is in full swing and there’s lots of fun things to do in Miami this time of year! If you’ve had enough of the sand and surf and want to escape the heat for a bit, head to one of these creative studios and give your kids a chance to express their creativity.

I’ve taken my kids to most of these places and they’ve been a big hit. If you have a crafty kid, you’re probably used to picking up wet paint brushes, tiny paper scraps, and sequins galore. The great thing about going to an art studio is they provide all the supplies — and all you have to do is show up.

My Top 5 Places to Get Crafty in Miami

Here are my favorite places to get crafty with my kids. Please comment below if you know of other places to add to this list — I’d love to discover more creative gems.

Artsy Hive

This pottery painting studio in Miami Shores offers a wide selection of hundreds of pre-fired ceramics from which to choose, including mugs, platters, bowls and animals. My daughters fell in love with the unicorn and puppy, while their friend chose a cactus mug. Paint your pottery any way you’d like, leave it with the amazing Artsy Hive team to fire and seal your masterpiece, and pick it up a week later. The studio is open Tuesday through Saturday with no reservations necessary. However, call ahead since the schedule may change due to private events. They also host birthday parties, workshops and dance parties.

ZigZag Zebra Art Studio

If your children love art, then you have to check out this inspiring art studio near South Miami filled with eye candy at every turn. I recently took my 7-year-old daughter to ZigZag Zebra along with a couple of her friends and they had a blast during their painting workshop. In preparation for their upcoming First Communion, they painted a beautiful canvas of a girl holding a rosary. What a special way to bond with friends and create something meaningful while having fun. All the girls said they wanted to come back for more! ZigZag Zebra offers classes, workshops, birthday celebrations and even a summer camp starting on June 10th.

Color Me Mine

With several locations throughout Miami and beyond, you’ve probably already heard of Color Me Mine. This is a national brand that also offers pottery painting. We’ve attended a few painting parties and play dates at the South Miami location and it’s always loads of messy fun. Check your nearest location for upcoming events, such as the Fancy Nancy Tea Party on June 8th in South Miami. You can walk in and paint starting at 10 a.m. seven days a week. Reservations are recommended for weekends and holidays.

The Poppet Project

This one is on my list of places to go this summer! Located in El Portal, The Poppet Project is a children’s art, craft and science studio. Along with art supplies and craft projects, the studio offers several opportunities to for imaginative play. Little ones can experiment, take apart and build to their heart’s content at the rotating craft tables, science lab and tinkering stations. Projects vary so every day is a new adventure. Prices start at $14 for one hour ($12 each additional child). In addition to the open studio, they host parties and offer group classes.

Art Thyme

Located near The Falls shopping mall in the Pinecrest/Palmetto Bay Area, Art Thyme is open seven days a week for some creative play, birthday celebrations, classes, handprint projects, and even ladies’ night out. Here you can add your magic to a pottery piece, canvas, glass, and more. If you want to explore a 3D medium, have some fun with clay modeling — it’s relaxing and helps build dexterity. It’s a great activity for all ages! Drop by anytime or call ahead to reserve your spot.
