It’s Fall in Miami. The leaves may not be changing colors here, but this time of year brings opportunities to enjoy other seasonal wonders in our hometown. Now that we’ve said farewell to summer, let’s not forget we live in a tropical paradise where we get to enjoy the great outdoors all year long.

I’ll admit this is my personal favorite time of year. In October the temperature drops a bit and we can enjoy time outside without the scorching heat and humidity that summer brings. Here are a few of our top things to do in the fall, as well as a few new activities we’d like to try. Grab yourself a pumpkin spice latte, mark your calendar and come along for the ride!

Head to the Country

This time of year, we love heading south to the Redland area. We visit the petting zoo at Pinto’s Farm; pick strawberries, set the kids free in the playground and enjoy a refreshing fresh fruit shake at Burr’s Berry Farm (I’ve been going here since I was a little girl); take Instagrammable photos in the pumpkin patch at The Little Farm; bite into a heavenly sticky bun at Knaus Berry Farm, and so much more.

The Redland Fruit & Spice Park is another great option. It’s a 37-acre tropical garden where you can indulge your senses with exotic herbs, spices, fruit, and nuts. Stroll through the park with the kids at your own pace and enjoy picturesque gardens and water features. They also have several festivals throughout the year, including the upcoming Redland Food & Music Festival October 26-28.

My girls will soon return to their horseback riding classes at Miami International Riding Club, which they are very much looking forward to. They both share a love for horses. And I have to say that their riding classes came in handy during our mountain trail ride in the Rocky Mountains this past summer.

Something Fun For Everyone

If you are fond of literary talent or your kids love to read, head over to the Miami Book Fair. It takes place November 17-24 at Miami Dade College – Wolfson Campus. This annual event has been taking place since 1984 and it offers an impressive outdoor street fair, author presentations, storytelling, arts and crafts, and more.

Also in November, the Ford Championship Weekend (Nov. 15-17) offers fast-paced fun for the entire family during three days of NASCAR races at the Homestead-Miami Speedway. You can purchase multi-day packages with kids 12 and under eligible for half-price tickets and even some free events.

One of our most-visited places is Zoo Miami.

We delight in using our annual pass whenever we can and go to the zoo to do much more than see the animals. We visit the play area, the splash pad, get some exercise in by walking or biking, and attend cool events that take place throughout the year. October 26-27 brings Zoo Boo, where you can dress up in your Halloween costumes and go trick-or-treating at the zoo. They also have special surprises like performances and costume contests.

If you want to taste some of South Florida’s mouthwatering seafood, check out the South Beach Seafood Festival, from October 22-26 at Lummus Park. All you have to do is bring your appetite! Take your taste buds on a seafood adventure as local restaurants showcase some of their fresh and delicious selections during nightly culinary events leading up to the main event on Saturday, the 26th.

Last but certainly not least, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a must-do. Meander through the beautiful trails, admiring the gardens, shimmering lake and cascading waterfalls, playful birds, and more. This is a photographer’s dream. We especially enjoy their Wings of the Tropics exhibit filled with many vibrantly colored butterflies.

What are you waiting for? No matter what activity your family prefers, the most important thing is spending time together and enjoying the wonderful weather in this tropical paradise we call home.
