Hi Miami Mommas! First, I’d like to state that I am over the moon to be apart of this fantastic community! My name is Krystal Giraldo. I work full-time as a coordinator in the Domestic Violence Unit for the 11th Judicial Circuit. 3 years ago, my son, JJ made me a momma. But before that, I was a step-momma to my 12-year old stepdaughter, Bella. I was born in New Jersey, where my parents met but we moved here when I was just shy of 3 months old. So Miami is home! Although writing has been a hidden love of mine, my friends will tell you that I’ve had it on my bucket list to write a book of my own since high school. I’m nervous! But I am using this platform to open up and improve my writing, all while learning and growing along with YOU.

NOT A WICKED EVIL STEPMOMMA

I will start by saying that I am the daughter of divorced parents. When I first created my online dating profile, I made it very clear in my preference setting that I had no interest in dating anyone with children. I am after all also a product of divorce and I had no intention of ever having a blended family of my own. It became very evident on my “first” few first dates that the men with no children had no interest in searching for long-term love, but rather love for right now. I lost hope, deleted my profile and grabbed one of my dearest (and single) friends and convinced her to spend all our savings on a fabulous trip to New York. To date, it is still one of my favorite trips!

At the end of our trip, we were snowed in and couldn’t get back to Miami that afternoon. We shrugged it off, ate expensive steak and wine at one of the over-priced airport bistros and we both signed back online. This time, no preference. That is when I met Michael. Father of Bella, who at the time was 8 years old. I met my stepdaughter after 3 weeks of dating Michael and I used every tactic and memory I had of being a stepdaughter to form my own relationship with Bella. Motherhood is hard. But being a STEPMOM, a whole different chapter. I am very blessed because my relationships with both Bella and her mom are as ideal as any blended family can hope for. I hope to connect with other stepmoms so we can guide each other on this journey.

NICU/ASD/WARRIOR/SUPERWOMAN-MOMMA

JJ, my now 3-year-old, was born into the family fairly quickly. (#NoJudgement) Way quicker than I had for my own plans. But God has a funny way of who reminding you who’s really in charge. I’m more of a Type-A, all-around perfectionist type of person. JJ’s grand appearance into this world was anything but. I will start by saying that I could have been on that I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant show on TLC because I didn’t find out till I was 24 WEEKS. I know! But I will save that and his birth story for another post. What I can say is GOD’S TIMING AND PLAN IS SO, SO GOOD! I would also love to connect with other NICU mommas and mommas of children on the spectrum.

WHY I WANT TO WRITE

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always joked that I wanted to write a book or a memoir. I hoped that others would gain some knowledge from my mistakes. But that sounds like almost every other memoir I’ve passed along the book store aisles. What I can tell you is I am always seeking friends and advice. I’d like to think I’m not so bad at actually giving advice. But most importantly, I love that this community targets the average mom. The mom who isn’t afraid to admit that they have NO idea what they’re doing. But still willing to empower each other and figure it out! Because that’s what MOMS do.

I am so excited to learn from each and every one of you: the contributors, the events team, the entire Miami Moms Blog community!
