I am a New Jersey native, with Cuban Ecuadorian roots. My paternal side is Cuban, and my maternal side is Ecuadorian.  My uncle and my grandmother (Cuban side) have always been my connection to Miami. Living in the northeast all my life, I have endured some brutal winters.  It was no surprise that I loved visiting my family in Miami. Not only to spend time with them, but to also enjoy the weather, the culture, the ocean, and of course the food! Miami has always felt like my home away from home.

My trajectory to live in Miami started by meeting my now husband on the dance floor on a random night at the Copacabana night club in NYC (anyone else been there circa 2006?). The sparks of chemistry took off as we merengue’d our way through the dance floor.  We reconnected through Myspace about 4 months later!  Our conversations never stopped. We had a long distance relationship which many thought would never last.  While attending New York Chiropractic College in upstate NY at the time, he entered bootcamp in order to pursue his career as an Active Duty military member in the US Coast Guard. After getting married and having two beautiful girls, it took about 14 years to finally get orders to Miami.  We have been stationed down here for two years and we are absolutely loving it!

Love is a battlefield, but motherhood away from family doesn’t have to be!

Being a military spouse has been an honor and a great privilege.  But it also has had its share of challenges as well. The biggest challenge for me has been being away from my family and friends and having to hit the “pause button” on my career as a Chiropractor. With life’s obstacles being thrown at me from every direction, and having the hardest time with deployments, I came face to face with depression and a wave of anxiety I have never experienced.  Feeling isolated and alone, I wasn’t sure if I was going to see the end of this tunnel as my inner mean girl kept blocking that light.

Motherhood saved my life because it was no longer about me. It filled my heart with so much love and hope. With the birth of my oldest daughter, (she’s now, 6yrs old), I made the decision to accept myself with where I was in that phase of my life. By the time my second daughter was born (she is now 3yrs old! Kids grow so fast!), I made it my mission to improve my own mental and physical health.  I also decided to become acquainted with other moms when stationed in Key West, FL.  It was there that I made long lasting friendships and found my tribe.

In true military fashion, I was crushed to leave the relationships I worked so hard to build. In this lifestyle, the friends you make become your family.  And so when I moved to Miami, I made it my mission to allow myself to be open to new relationships. Enter Miami Moms Blog…

Hey, I’m Zoe, a Blogger!

When I found Miami Moms Blog, through a sleepless night with my youngest, I was just searching for activities to do around the area.  But I quickly realized that the Miami Moms Blog is so much more.  This is a beautiful community of moms, who are just like me, who want to support other moms and inspire them to know that it is okay to be a mom and still dream bigger. Mom life can be challenging at times, but we don’t have to do it alone.  As a military spouse and momma, seeing this message ripple through their website spoke to me through leaps and bounds.

I am beyond grateful to have a new home and be part of the Miami Moms Blog team.  I hope you will allow me to share my knowledge on the importance of self care, wellness, and life experiences. If you don’t have a tribe yet and are new to the Miami area, lean in and reach out to this one. We are ready to welcome you in with open arms!

Let’s stay well together mommas,

Zoe

  1. So great to meet you Zoe and hope to connect with you soon. I am also a Military Spouse (stationed in the UK) and we are trying to make it back to Miami (we are supposed to fly tomorrow, but that is looking less likely given all of the travel bans). Thank you for opening up and being vulnerable about the stresses and challenges milspouses encounter. Excited to meet you soon.

  2. Thank you Zoe for sharing your life journey. You find ways to stay positive and strong ? through all the challenges that life brings your way. Sharing this ability helps many people at times refocus. Yes it’s not always easy and yes it gets lonely but finding positive in what you have and not focusing on what you don’t is your awesome secret power. Looking forward to reading more blogs from you 🙂
