About World Preemie Day

World Preemie Day is celebrated on November 17th. It is a day to raise awareness of all of the premature births that happen worldwide. Prematurity is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years old. 15 million babies are born prematurely every year and over one million of them will not survive. In the US 1 in 10 babies is born prematurely.

How to support the cause?

November is a special time we can use to support the health crisis that is prematurity. We can donate to organizations such as March of Dimes, Little Big Souls, National Preemie Foundation, Born Great Foundation, ICU Baby, and many others.

How to support mommas of preemies?

The best way to support mommas that are currently in this season is simply to listen. Listen, share stories, and let each other know you are not alone. We sometimes get caught up in the moment of delivery but no one prepares us for the struggles that come after. Moms of preemies suffer through an emotional rollercoaster that doesn’t end at delivery. Month-long NICU stays, having to leave the hospital without your baby, and adjusting to life on a new timeline can all be very overwhelming.

Hospitals & World Preemie Month

In hospitals, the units decorate with purple everything! From balloons to lights, purple is the color of the month. Some hospitals give out purple t-shirts to their staff to raise awareness and shed light on the cause. Care packages are sent to the NICU for both staff and families.

If you know a family that has been through this journey, ask them about it, and listen to their story. Whether you donate to a foundation or wear a purple t-shirt, anything that helps spread awareness can save a life!
