Derby Day is one of those events that I love to celebrate! What can be more fun than dressing up with a big hat, drinking a cocktail with our pinkies up, and being able to acceptably yell at the top of our lungs during the race? Of course, this is an event that can be fun for the whole family! Take some time before the race to pick the horses you want to cheer for. You can even make at-home bets with M&M’s–or was that just my family? While the kiddos get excited for the race, you can take a few minutes to prepare your drink! In order to make the most of your Derby Day experience, it is imperative to have your Mint Julep in hand and ready to go at race time.
The keys to this iconic cocktail: Crushed ice and Kentucky bourbon
The Mint Julep is widely considered the drink of The Kentucky Derby. Crushed ice is a staple that adorns the bottom of every glass. Add muddled mint, simple syrup, and of course some good old Kentucky Bourbon, and you are ready to go! I prefer Town Branch, made by Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. They are the only distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon trail. The bourbon is aged for 5 years in new American oak barrels and is 90 proof. I love how the notes of caramel, brown sugar, and cherry compliment a Mint Julep.
Cheers, my dears!
