A recap of a fun event with Comic Kids, that provided Miami moms the opportunity to bless children in need
In April, Miami Mom Collective partnered with Comic Kids—a local nonprofit–to give moms in Miami the unique opportunity to have their children experience a drawing class while helping children in need.
This fun class at The Doral Yard provided children a fun, artsy screen-free learning activity on a teacher planning day. Comic Kids founder and Miami mom Kat Barrow-Horth taught the kids how to design their own squishy mallows. Her husband, Reed Horth, led a super fun storytime for the children to inspire them for a drawing activity involving the famous Dog Man.
We had a full house of entertained children and happy moms that morning. And the best part is we reached our goal: with the tickets purchased for the event, we bought 40 drawing and coloring books and donated them to local children who are patients at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
On May 2nd, Comic Kids taught a Star Wars-themed drawing class at the hospital. Dressed up as Star Wars characters (“May the 4th be with you!”), Kat and Reed graciously engaged children undergoing medical treatments in a session where they learned to draw and color Baby Yoda and Princess Leia. We gave the books to the children at the end of the class and their smiles filled our hearts with joy and purpose.
We are thankful for the moms who participated in the event in April and for Comic Kids’ mission and outstanding efforts to bring art classes and resources to children in underserved communities by using comics, cartoons, and books.
Moms On Purpose
As part of our mission to encourage, equip, and empower moms in Miami, we will continue to partner with local non-profit organizations to create spaces and accessible opportunities for moms to help other moms, children, and families in need. Stay tuned for the next one!
