To say I love fall and pumpkin spice everything is a HUGE understatement.

Having grown up in Northern Virginia and then spending a few years in Chester County, PA the hardest thing about living in Miami–for me–is missing the fall season. So I have to find ways to create it for our family. Especially our Miami-born kids.

For me this looks like pulling all the fall decor out of the garage, Steve’s and my annual viewing of You’ve Got Mail, asking my sister to send us pictures of pretty leaves, and all things pumpkin spice. And having recently learned more about the health and dental benefits of pumpkin and other fall foods (including pumpkin spice!) I’m here for it a little extra this year.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is chock full of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that are good for our bodies–including our teeth! This nutrient-dense seasonal superfood provides vitamins A, C, and K, minerals zinc, calcium, potassium, copper, and fiber in every serving. When it comes to supporting oral health, vitamin A helps keep saliva flowing while magnesium and calcium contribute to strong tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Additionally, fiber acts as a natural toothbrush to help keep your teeth clean while also increasing saliva which helps protect against gum disease and tooth decay. How cool is that?!

Obviously, you have to use the real thing. But don’t fret if you’re not a fan of pumpkin pie; there are LOTS of easy and delicious ways to add pumpkin to your family’s plates this fall–without having to be carving into pumpkins all season long. Here are some of my favorites:

Chilis & Soups: Add a can of unsweetened pumpkin (NOT the pie filling) to chilis, soups, or even spaghetti sauce! Its mild flavor and texture are virtually undetectable, even by some of the pickiest palates. Or if you really want to treat yourself, try this delicious pumpkin bisque. Souptember, anyone?

Baked Goods: There’s something so warm and cozy about homemade pumpkin muffins, pancakes, waffles, and breads. These 2-ingredient pumpkin muffins are my go-to; I’ve made them for years and my kids love them. And I love that they’re not too sweet or sugary 😉 This recipe for pumpkin pancakes is lower in sugar and the ingredients include apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, and pumpkin pie spice–other natural foods with lots of health benefits. Additionally, you can make these pancakes vegan and/or GF. If you’re a bread person, this vegan apple pumpkin bread is sure to please. Try it for breakfast, an after-school snack, or bring it to your next gathering. I think this bread would also make a great gift.

Spice

Did you know that pumpkin spice has a variety of health and dental benefits, too?! I like to think that’s just one aspect of its elemental magic. This beloved seasonal concoction is made up of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and clove–spices with natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Together these spices can boost your immune system, promote digestion, and may even protect against gum disease. Sounds (and tastes) good to me! You can make your own and use it for your fall baking or try it in this Pumpkin Cold Foam Cold Brew recipe. Just adjust the sugar content and opt for sugar-free syrup for the sake of your teeth.

…& Everything Nice

Pumpkin is not the only fall food with oral health benefits. Seasonal foods like apples, cranberries, kale, nuts, and cheese not only add to the fall vibes but are also good for your teeth and gums. So get creative and have some fun in the kitchen with these fall foods.
