They say an apple a day keeps the doctor away. They’ve been saying it–or a version of it–since the late 19th century. And it turns out there’s something to it!

Nature’s Toothbrush

October 21st, aka National Apple Day, is a day to celebrate all things apple. And for good reason; because not only do apples provide benefits to support your overall health, but eating them supports oral and dental health as well! Sometimes referred to as nature’s toothbrush, apples help remove plaque–just by eating them! Eating apples also increases the flow of saliva, which is the body’s way of neutralizing acid on the teeth and preventing tooth decay. Additionally, vitamin C reduces inflammation–which is especially important for gum health–lowers blood pressure, and keeps cholesterol levels in check. And potassium keeps teeth and bones strong. Talk about an oral health superfood!

Easy Lunchbox Hack

Because apples are naturally sweet, it’s generally easy to get kids to eat them. And I love that you don’t have to do much to prep and serve them–just wash them well, dry them off and voilà. But that can be a no-go with a loose tooth.

Here’s a way to pack apple slices that will keep them from turning brown:

  • Use an apple slicer to slice through half of the apple from top to bottom
  • Put a clean rubber band around the top half of the apple
  • Slice through the rest of the apple
  • Wrap it up and toss it in the lunchbox

Easy peasy! This way, the sliced apple is held tightly together which keeps the slices from turning brown before lunchtime. I was only last month years old when I learned this from a newspaper article my mother-in-law sent me… brilliant, right?!

Apple Picking

When you live in Miami, the closest we get to local apple picking is “picking” the kind we want in the produce section at the grocery store. It just doesn’t get cold enough for them to grow here. But if you’re planning to get out of town for a fall getaway with the fam, take a look and see if there’s an apple orchard near your destination! It’s a sweet and memorable way to stock up on fresh apples, enjoy the season, and soak up all the fall vibes before heading back to South Florida. Check out this website to locate apple farms and orchards by state and add one to your itinerary.
