Let’s Celebrate Hispanic Diversity!
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 through October 15. During this month, we celebrate Hispanic culture and history. We also learn about famous Hispanic influencers. In the same way, we learn so much about Latin American countries throughout this month!
How it Started
Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson observed Hispanic Heritage for a week. Later, President Ronald Reagan continued the observance and declared it to be a month-long celebration.
Why September 15?
Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because it is the anniversary date of independence for Latin American countries. It is the PERFECT day to begin celebrating cultural diversity!
How to Celebrate
This is a time for Hispanics to celebrate their traditions and cultural backgrounds. You can celebrate this month in SO many fun ways:
-Hispanic Role Models: Have children research and learn about famous Hispanic role models. They can create a project about the lives of these great influencers. Excellent examples are Celia Cruz, Marc Anthony, Alex Rodriguez, and Eva Mendes.
-Sabor Latino: Cook up a Hispanic dish! Try a Spanish Paella from Spain, a Bandeja Paisa from Colombia, or even a savory Mofongo from Puerto Rico! Que rico!
-Support Small Businesses: Not in the mood to cook? That is OK! Support a local Hispanic restaurant. Let them do the cooking for you!
-Bring on the Music: Dance! Arriba! Take a dance class or dance from the own comfort of your home! Dance some merengue, bachata, mambo, cha-cha, salsa, tango, or even flamenco. Ole!
-Interviews: Have your kiddos interview family members, neighbors, or friends who immigrated to the United States from Latin countries. Lots of learning going on here!
-Read: Read Hispanic stories/folktales to your children. Storytime is such a nice time to enjoy with family. Some Hispanic authors include: Gary Soto, Pat Mora, and Pam Munoz Ryan.
-Arts and Crafts: It is maraca time! Have kids create their very own Hispanic instruments! They can create maracas, bongos, or castanets.
-Piñata Time: Kids can also create fun, colorful piñatas and fill them with treats!
-Game Time: Play a game of Dominoes!
-Plant a Garden: As a family, plant common vegetables found in Latin countries such as corn, beans, and peppers. These are essential in cooking Latin dishes to fill them up with some SAZON!
Enjoy!
