Miami–The City I Love
My name is Gina Carriazo Hickey. I was born in Cali, Colombia and moved to Miami the summer before I started second grade. Miami was so different back then. My mom always remembers that drivers were courteous and parking was ample. But, even though Miami is filled with chaotic moments, it’s my favorite place in the entire world. I remember seeing the skyline above the coastline on my way back from my business trips and absorbing how beautiful it all is–especially from above. Miami is the city that smiles and gives you an attitude at the same time. It’s a place where the rain is as powerful as the sun, and the vibrant scene hides a quiet charm. It is the city where we can find happiness as long as we look in the right places.
I don’t travel much anymore, and I no longer have Platinum status. Though I have something better. I have my own business, and I make my own rules. At times I feel like I’m living the dream, and sometimes I want to hide under the warm laundry that I finally got around to after realizing that I have more on my to-do list for the day than a human can do in a week.
On Marriage & Motherhood
I’ve been married for half my life. 20 years to be exact. And, I work with my partner so you can add another 10 years to that stat. It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s for those who are not content with the ordinary challenges of marriage. I’m all about keeping it interesting.
We have two daughters: Fabianna is ten. She is a tween who’s in “the calm before the storm” stage. She’s sweet and sassy and makes me laugh with her outrageousness. The little ones are definitely the weird ones, and I say it in the loving way that only a mother could.
My eldest, Paloma, is a teenager. She’s goodness and chaos with a hint of smarty pants and reminds me of myself at that age. We home-schooled her this year, and it’s safe to say we’ve learned just as much as she has. As I said before, why stop at boring, everyday challenges? Parenting a teenager just isn’t challenging enough. So, homeschooling was an obvious choice for us. Go big or go home (no pun intended).
My girls show me what I’m made for on a daily basis. Sometimes it’s pure gold. Sometimes it’s not. Motherhood has taught me that life is what you make of it. You make your way, you make your joy. You make your peace. And you make your bed. So, enjoy it and embrace it.
On Joining Miami Moms Blog
It’s so cool to be a part of this awesome community of moms. I’m looking forward to oversharing about my experience as a mom, wife, and entrepreneur. I also hope to be able to break off some of the knowledge I’ve learned along the way. As the co-founder of a digital sandbox where we empower kids through technology, I’ve learned a lot about the role it plays in our children’s lives and why the answer is more and not less. Thanks for reading all the way to the end. You’re awesome. Stay tuned for my posts, and give me feedback. I’m a newbie at this. XO.
Kudos on homeschooling your kids! I have been contemplating on doing that.
Thank you! It’s been a wonderfully stressful experience. I think every parent should try it. At least once.
Can’t wait to read more of your posts!
Thanks! Can’t wait either ?
