Family Game Night: A Fun & Meaningful Way to Connect

0

Finding fun things to do as a family is always a planning stage. You would think it’s easy but, as the kids get older it’s harder to maintain. Everyone’s schedule gets complicated. When they are little boy is it easier.

Honestly, anything can be a game night. But when they hit teenage years and hey–let’s be honest–even in their 20s, it gets trickier. Well, no need to worry I am here to share what we do.

This is a fun way to get to know your kids and spend fun time together. We started to notice a couple of years ago that we were spending less time together as a family. Our kids had a whole other life now. Teenage years are so hard–all they want to do is be in their room, be on their devices or hang with friends. We have kids in their 20s and a teenager. So, between work, school, boyfriends, and girlfriends our family dinners were diminishing.

We started The Arias Game Night. Let me start off by saying we are a competitive family so, of course, we had to have a trophy. Well, not much a trophy as a championship belt. But, this was a Godsend as it brought us together. I will share some details and remember you can always make it your own.

Getting Started

Let’s start by designating a day in the month. So, pick a day that works for everyone. Plan what games will work for your family. We’re a party of 5 so each month one of us gets to pick a game. Games that work for us are Cards Against Humanity, You’ve Got Problems, What Do You Meme?, Monopoly, and Uno. These are our go-to games. When game night commences take photos and then all devices are put away during the game time. We start off by saying, “Let the games begin!” Now we talked about games, let’s talk prize.

Winner’s Prize

The prize is the best part of game night for a competitive family. We have a championship belt we use. So, the belt is always up for grabs each month. The winner becomes the champion with photo ops and, most importantly, bragging rights for the month. The following month the winner has a choice of music, and we play it as they enter the room with the belt. But there’s more than just winning the belt. The winner decides what the snacks will be on the game night. The belt is placed on a table for it to be defended. If there’s a new winner, the defending champ must present the new champ with the belt.

Togetherness

This has truly been so much fun and has brought our family close. I have learned we are very competitive. We have had the defending champ run with the belt to not give it up to the champ bragging all month hardcore. At this current time, my husband has been our champ for the past 2 months. And boy does remind us often. LoL. Who will put an end to his winning streak? That’s part of the fun of trying to take the winner down.

Make your family game night your own. And most importantly, have fun with it! These are the best memories. You can continue it for years to come and it will become a family tradition and will always bring tons of laughter. The best part while playing is that one time a month there are no worries, no arguing, and most importantly it’ll bring you all together.

So when’s your family game night?
