Vitamins are a must for growing children and adolescents. In addition to a balanced diet, they help fill in some of the nutritional gaps they may not be getting from food. Especially if they’re picky eaters. They also help boost immunity so that their bodies can fight back against the viruses and germs they encounter on a daily basis. But did you know that some vitamins are better for teeth than others? And no, I’m not talking about brands. It turns out chewable vitamins and liquid vitamins provide some additional benefits for children’s teeth. Who knew?!

Benefits of Chewable Vitamins

If you’re of a certain era (like me!), the first thing you think of when you hear chewable vitamins are those multicolored Flintstones vitamins from the 80s and 90s. My sister and I had those every morning before grabbing a pack of Pop-Tarts to eat at the bus stop. I mean, they were okay. But when it came time to choose multivitamins for my own kids, the gummy ones just seemed better. After all, they look fun and my kids enjoy them.

Turns out the gummies aren’t doing their teeth any favors. Gummy vitamins and candies are the worst when it comes to causing cavities. The sticky, gummy residue isn’t easily cleared from the mouth and that prolonged contact causes acid to attack tooth enamel. This is what leads to cavities. Yikes.

Chewable vitamins, on the other hand, are designed to distribute nutrients in the mouth as they dissolve. This allows the vitamins to come into contact with children’s teeth and gums as they chew, which supports their oral wellness. Additionally, the chewing of the vitamins allows for better absorption, which is also true for liquid vitamins. I. Had. No. Idea.

Making the Switch

After learning this, my husband and I have decided to make the switch ourselves. We fully expect some kickback from the kids. But we know this will be MUCH better for the kids’ oral health and will help preserve the sealants on their molars. And thankfully, there are many more options to choose from than the ones we grew up with 😉
