Costumes can get expensive, but Halloween doesn’t have to break the bank. Here are some easy ideas and tips for DIY Halloween costumes!
DIY HALLOWEEN COSTUME TIP 1: SHOP YOUR CLOSET
Pick a movie or theme you like and search your closet and garage for items that complete the look. A big fan of the original Jurassic Park, I had fun recreating Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Alan Grant, and the t-rex, complete with the Jeep (a Christmas gift for my little one a couple years ago) and a t-rex. Don’t be afraid to borrow from someone’s closet. The button-down and t-shirt I’m wearing belong to my dad and husband.
If you don’t have an item you need, get creative. I couldn’t find a red bandana for my son’s Dr. Grant look, so I substituted with red tissue paper!
DIY HALLOWEEN COSTUME TIP 2: GET CRAFTY
Some costumes just don’t exist and require a little creativity. So when my daughter wanted to be Elena of Avalor a few years ago, I knew I’d have to get crafty if I wanted to be her animal sidekick Skylar the Jaquin.
I just cut some poster board in the shape of wings and used construction and tissue papers to add color and texture. Using the same paper, I made a tail and ears and shopped my closet for the top and shorts. I completed the look with some simple face painting and some paper spots I taped to my shirt. My daughter was thrilled and I spent under $5!
DIY HALLOWEEN COSTUME TIP 3: LOOK OUTSIDE OF COSTUME SHOPS
Last year the kids dressed up as Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. I wanted to be Wendy but found her costume difficult to find (or extremely pricey on websites like Etsy). So I shopped around some fast fashion sites and found a Wendy-esque dress for under $20. I simply added blue ribbon which I found on discount at JoAnn Fabrics on my waist and in my hair to finish it off.
