What Is Earth Day?
The first Earth Day took place in 1970 when a day dedicated to environmental education was announced. In the 1960s and years prior, there were few environmental laws protecting our water and air from pollution. Gaylord Nelson, an environmental activist, was coined the father of Earth Day. Nelson had an idea that has now grown into a worldwide celebration for the planet and influenced the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency and numerous laws that protect our environment including:
- the Clean Air Act
- the Water Quality Improvement Act
- the Water Pollution and Control Act Amendments
- the Toxic Substances Control Act
- the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- the Federal Environmental Pesticide Control Act
- the Endangered Species Act
- the Safe Drinking Water Act
