Camping + Disney
There is nothing Disney doesn’t do well, camping at the Fort Wilderness Campground included. This campground is everything I could wish for while camping. It gives you the peaceful feeling of camping and all the comforts of Disney.
Accommodations
First things first, there are many options when it comes to accommodations. You can rent a cabin with multiple bedrooms or bring your RV and set it up at a full hook-up site. You have a few options for tent camping with preferred, regular, and primitive campsites. We booked a preferred tent campsite. These sites and the regular sites include a water hook-up, electrical connections, and even cable (which we didn’t even use because we were so busy).
Something else I find critical when camping is the cleanliness of the facilities. I am more of a “glamper” than a camper. I say this because I draw the line at plumbing, so wherever we go, there must be clean shower and bathroom facilities. And the facilities at the campground are impeccable!
Waking up to the sounds of nature is an incredible experience. The campsites are close together, but the way they have set them up, you don’t feel it at all. You feel surrounded by trees. Having my morning coffee right off our grill while sitting in our camp chairs and hearing the kids laugh and the trees sway is so soothing.
The campsite has various shops for Disney swag and a few convenience stores for anything you could need while camping. They also have sit-down restaurants as well as snack shops where you can get your favorite Mickey-shaped treat.
We went in the fall. It was cooler but not freezing, which is perfect for sleeping outdoors. Also, the weather made it a zero humidity and mosquito zone!
Activities
After setting up our campsite, we hopped on our bikes to explore the grounds. They have bike and golf cart rentals if you don’t bring your bikes. The bikes made it much easier to get around the campground than if we had just had our car.
The campground has a couple of pools, one of which has a great splash pad for littles and a large cork-screw water slide for the older kids (or us adults who are young at heart). There are poolside games and entertainment for the kids, so parents can calmly lounge while the kids have a dance party and do supervised activities!
There are parks, sports courts, and jogging trails through the woods.
They have stables where you can sign up for horseback, wagon, and pony rides. The stables are also home to the famous Disney Clydesdales featured in the park parades.
You can rent kayaks, canoes, and mouse boats at the marina! We loved taking our time cruising around Bay Lake in those mouse boats. There are pontoon boat fishing tours available too.
All these are things you can do without even going to the parks. If you want to go to Magic Kingdom, you can hop on the shuttle boat right from the marina. We didn’t go to the parks during our trip, but we did shuttle over to another resort for lunch one day.
In the evening, head to the campfire sing-a-long, where you can roast s’mores (you can buy a kit or bring your own) and take pics with Chip and Dale. They also have outdoor cinema nights.
Our favorite nighttime activity was going to the beach by the dock. That is when you really feel the Disney magic. The Electrical Water Pageant boat parade drifts right in front of the campground beach, so you can get an up-close view of that light-up sea snake. After that parade, you will have an unobstructed view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks! They even pipe the music into speakers right on the beach! So instead of battling the crowds for the best view at the park, you can lounge on the beach with a blanket and enjoy.
The best part was being able to disconnect from the rush of our day-to-day and connect as a family only a few hours away.
It was a great way to have a Disney experience on a smaller budget and feel the Disney magic at a slower pace.
I cannot recommend the Disney Fort Wilderness Campground enough! It is a great getaway for any Miami family.
This sounds so fun!
It was so fun! We will be going back for sure!
