Hey Mama Hey! My name is Jessica Socarras and I can’t believe I am finally blogging! I have always wanted to share my story and experiences with others and I’m so thankful for this wonderful community of women at Miami Mom Collective for encouraging me to take the leap!

Born and raised in Miami, I am first-generation Cuban-American. My parents both came to the United States at a very young age and met in their mid 20’s. Unlike most families, they separated when I was about 3 years old. So, I grew up with two places to call home. Both very different. My life with my mom was at times off-balance and uncertain. Whereas, my father was always present.

At the age of 14, I decided it would be best if I moved in with my dad. A decision that inevitably lead me to meet my husband in high school. We first met at South Miami Senior High, Go Cobras!! I was a senior, but he was only a sophomore, so I didn’t give him the time of day. We joke about it all the time now. What would our lives be like had we actually dated back then?

Fast forward to 2011 with a simple Facebook friend request, a few late-night chats, and a run-in at a Dolphins game and we were inseparable. Things moved very quickly, we said I love you in less than a month and I even moved in with him (and his family) 3 months into dating. It’s been nine years now, we just celebrated our 4 year wedding anniversary and have 2 beautiful children. When you know, you know, right?

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to be a mom. Our boys are both under the age of two. Joseph is twenty-two months and Julian is six months old, but I like to think I am still new to the hood, motherhood.

Being a new mom can be overwhelming and I still have so much more to learn, but I have truly grown from this new role. Not to mention Julian was a HUGE surprise. I was just starting to feel like I was getting into a routine with Joseph and boom! We always planned on having more children, but sixteen months apart is crazy.

I have to admit that managing the demands of these little ones has been challenging on so many levels, but they are my biggest blessings. There’s just something about seeing them smile that makes everything else seem so small in comparison. I know I’m not the only mom that feels this way and I’ve met a few of you over the last year thanks to this wonderful community.

In 2019 I stepped out of my comfort zone and applied to be apart of the Miami Mom Collective’s events team. Joseph was only 10 months old, we already knew I was pregnant with number 2, and I wanted the opportunity to meet new moms. I thought I’d put my crafting abilities to work, while also finding a community to share my mom life experiences with.

I had no idea I’d be accepted, let alone meet some of the most inspiring and understanding women over the last year. This judgment-free zone became a weekly must with our Cafecito dates and grew into friendships I will cherish. I can only hope to inspire some of you through this new journey. You are not alone Mama!
