My husband learned early on in our parenting journey that it was a good idea to keep my little secret snack shelf stocked with chocolate. Especially dark chocolate. It’s the perfect little treat at the end of a trying day or paired with a cup of coffee, and also features a wide range of health benefits

But did you know that dark chocolate also promotes healthy teeth?!

Cacao & Theobromine & Minerals… Oh, My!

Cacao is a rockstar. In addition to its powerful antioxidant properties, cacao contains theobromine–a naturally occurring alkaloid that reduces the risk of cavities and strengthens enamel to prevent tooth decay. And if that wasn’t enough, dark chocolate is also chock full of iron, magnesium, zinc, copper, and phosphorus. Magnesium supports sleep, zinc boosts immunity, and phosphorus helps keep your bones and teeth healthy and strong. It’s a dairy-free, low-sugar treat that clears the mouth quickly (unlike other candy). Think of it as a sweet way to avoid decay 😉

Enjoy Responsibly

As with most of our favorite treats, dark chocolate should be enjoyed responsibly. A recent study found that several brands of dark chocolate contain levels of lead and cadmium that can be especially harmful to pregnant women and young children. This article from Consumer Reports includes a helpful list of safer dark chocolate choices as well as a list of better ways to eat dark chocolate.
