This Month’s MOM STRONG Theme: Setting SMART Goals

2024 is here and with it brings a new year full of fresh starts and new perspectives. The big question during this time of year is, “What’s your New Year’s resolution?” Are you going to eat more home-cooked meals? Exercise more often? Finally start that new project? When we think about setting goals, we can often get overwhelmed and stressed, especially when they seem so farfetched. It’s important to have big, long-term goals, however, it is much more manageable when those goals are broken down into smaller, easily digestible chunks. With every goal there is a journey to go on, so we need to focus on “hopping over puddles” rather than “jumping over oceans.”

Setting SMART goals will be your friend this year. Learn how to set small, achievable goals that will build confidence and resilience so over time you can reach those bigger goals. Don’t forget to celebrate the small wins along the way to increase motivation!

What goes into setting a SMART goal?

Specific: What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Tip: Set numbers with deadlines.
Measurable: Make sure your goal is trackable to measure success.
Attainable: Set goals that are realistic. Tip: Make it challenging but possible to achieve.
Relevant: Make sure your goal is in line with your values and long-term goals.
Time-bound: Set a timeline by which you would like to have your goal completed. Tip: this allows you to stay motivated and focused.

Prepare for Change

Making changes to your daily routines and habits isn’t easy. While writing down your goals can make it seem less challenging, it can still be hard to actually implement the daily changes you need to see success. So before diving head-first into your goals, take a step back and reflect on the following:

  1. What were my goals last year?
  2. Where did I make progress?
  3. Where didn’t I see progress?
  4. What can I change this year to help myself be more successful in achieving my goals?

When you start thinking about the changes you want to make to your goal-achieving strategies, make sure to:

  • Stay positive
  • Make gradual changes
  • Build on small successes
