If working from home has shown me anything, it’s been to a. appreciate coffee breaks with co-workers and b. ORGANIZATION IS KEY. (In no particular order…) It’s easy to get lost in meal plans, extracurricular activity schedules, time sharing (if you’re a blended family), work and so much more!
It is often a joke amongst my colleagues, that they need to split themselves into 2 people just to get their work done. Then I remember my own responsibilities. The schedules of 13 judges, 1 toddler, 1 teenage stepdaughter, cleaning a household, 1 significant other, AND THEN SOME. If anyone can relate: I know, it’s you, Mama! I have found some easy (and inexpensive) ways to help you get and stay organized.
Tip 1: Calendars. Calendars, Everywhere.
I have calendars everywhere. I know this is not ideal for everyone, but for me, this is the only thing that keeps me sane. My (blended) family has our fair share of weekend tradeoffs and scheduled activities. And as a calendar coordinator for a living, well… it is literally in the title. I have found that visually looking at the week–and even the month–has been a huge game-changer for me.
Because we are part of a blended family, I label weekends in different colors on the calendar. Even if you’re not in a blended family, labeling responsibilities, family members, and activities by color makes it easier on the eyes and can be incorporated with the whole family! I also try to keep a separate calendar for just work to avoid confusing everyone.
Tip 2: Syncing HELPS.
This part can be a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it’s the best! Because I have physical calendars all over the place, but don’t take them all with me, syncing has become my new best friend. Once I manually write something down, I also make sure to have my cell phone handy so I can input it in my phone’s calendar as well. The nice thing about modern-day cell phones is that you can attach calendar alerts with alarms and reminder notices.
Cell phones nowadays also come with list features making it easy and convenient to put grocery lists, shopping lists, and even birthday lists directly into the thing we can’t seem to live without these days: our phone. This is optional, but having an Alexa and/or a smartwatch also helps with the ease of organizing everything right at your fingertips!
Tip 3: GOOD, OLD TO DO LIST.
Smartphones, smartwatches, Alexa, tablets, navigations: we are privileged (and a little spoiled) with modern-day technology. But nothing is as satisfying for a Type A person as (physically) crossing something off your to-do list. Lists can help you stay on top of your everyday household chores, prioritize work assignments, and stay on track with your kids’ activities and school responsibilities. It can remind you of the smallest or biggest task for the day or the week. It can give you ease that you’re not forgetting something. And it can help you FEEL organized and on top of your responsibilities.
So run to Home Goods or Target and get yourself the cutest, most inspiring to-do list! Feel good about crossing things off and getting things DONE. And don’t forget to squeeze in some self-care in there too, Mama!
You got this!
I love these tips, especially the one about going to Target and Home Goods 😉
I have to admit: that is also my favorite part!
