This Month’s MOM STRONG Theme: Spring Cleaning | Mind & Body

March 20th is the official start of spring and with that comes spring cleaning! It’s symbolic of a new beginning and a time to clear away clutter. Spring cleaning is not just for cleaning away physical clutter, but it‘s also a great time to cleanse the mind and body of negative thoughts and unhealthy habits.

Here are 4 ways you can welcome spring and give your body and mind a seasonal makeover:

Cut out mental clutter.

Limit time on social media and news channels to reduce information overload. Journaling your thoughts on paper and then throwing it away helps you to literally get rid of your mental clutter.

Get to work on tasks you’ve been putting off.

Create a list of tasks then get out your calendar and see where you can fit them in. Write down when you are going to complete them one by one.

Clean your physical space to free up mental space.

When we are constantly living in a place that is disorganized and cluttered it can cause mental stress and fatigue. Try to clean space by space so you don’t get overwhelmed

Get your whole household involved.

Breaking down chores into individual chunks helps to make it go by faster and everyone gets the satisfaction that comes with cleaning and organizing.

When deep cleaning, we often tend to dwell on what isn’t working for us and what we
can get rid of. But, this is also a great time to reflect on what is working for your body
and mind. Nurture the people, places, and things that are serving you and put your freed-up energy into those.

March is also National Nutrition Month

Spring cleaning is also the perfect time to welcome new habits such as nourishing your body well and getting rid of unhealthy, processed foods. National Nutrition Month exists to encourage you to develop solid eating and physical activity habits you can stick to.

Here are 5 ways you can get involved with National Nutrition Month at home:

  • Commit to trying a new fruit or vegetable each week of March
  • Give each family member a chance to pick out a new healthy recipe to try each week and let them help prepare it
  • Try to eat more dinners as a family in March.
  • When watching TV, take commercials as a time to get in some movement even if it’s walking in place or stretching.
  • Practice mindful eating: try not to watch TV or scroll on social media when eating.
