It’s no surprise that mothers are experts at multitasking, especially if they live in the busy city of Miami 😉 Because of this, many of us don’t make ourselves a priority. Trying to juggle a household, relationships, a family, a career, and other activities made me realize the importance of “me time”. And here is the thing: if you’re trying to find the time, it will never happen. You have to MAKE the time.
I know what you’re thinking. “that’s easier said than done.” But what if I told you there IS a way of doing this?
First off, start getting into the mindset of why it’s important for you to have “me time”— you’re their example. Showing your children that proper rest, alone time, Jesus time, or whatever your example may be, is important. We want our children to learn healthy boundaries and time management. Displaying our priorities will do that. Being proactive with our health mentally, emotionally, and physically are all things we can teach our children. Plus, a happy mama is a better mama. The more you fill up, the more you can pour into your children. Taking time for yourself regularly will ultimately help you be the mom they need.
Here are some of my favorite ways of making “me time” regularly. And by regularly, I mean as often as I can fit it in—it may be once a month or daily.
Go for a Walk
Walks are free, flexible, and EXTREMELY beneficial. Depending on what time of day, you can enjoy that Miami sun and vitamin D. Personally, I find walking to be a 3 in 1 because it’s a light exercise that you can use to pray, reflect or even catch up with friends. This miniature escape is very flexible because you can go on a 10-minute walk, an hour walk, or anything in between and it is always refreshing.
Grab a Cafecito!
There is nothing like a fresh cafe con leche in your favorite coffee shop. Bring your Bible, journal, or a new book to enjoy. Shoot, the smell of coffee alone is a sweet treat. Coffee shops are also the perfect place for making time to catch up with your friend that you keep putting off.
Mani and Pedi, Anyone?!
Manicures and pedicures are one of the sweetest treats you can give yourself as a mama. Those hands that wash dishes, do the laundry, and pick up after your family deserve to be groomed. I’m aware that getting a manicure is a luxury that not everyone can afford on a regular basis, however, there are ways to do this affordably. Whether you do them yourself, buy reusable trendy stick-ons or add them to your monthly budget. Having groomed hands and feet will remind you throughout the week of the importance of self-care.
Take a Bubble Bath
Something as simple as setting up an ambient 20-minute bath will put me in the brightest of moods. Studies show the benefits of warm baths relating to stress, better sleep, circulation, and muscle tension relief. Baths too are one of the simplest ways to feel pampered. You can truly customize the experience by adding some essential oils and bath salts for extra benefits.
Wake Up Before Everyone Else
There is something to be said about the peace a new day can bring when no one is awake yet. I believe it’s the stillness of the mind before the start of a new day that makes early mornings great. Either way, it’s the perfect time to start your day on the right foot. Whether you fit in a quick workout, read, do a Bible study, journal, or simply soak up the early morning sun with a warm cup of joe—waking up before your littles is the perfect time to make “me time”.
If you think about it, it will be a blessing for your spouse, kids, and yourself to carve in a little time away in exchange for a happy and fulfilled mama. There are 1000’s of things to do that encourage alone time, so put away the excuses and make room in your calendar for YOU.
You deserve this, Mama ❤️
